Jo Ann Lee Gartig, 77, passed away at her home in Nacogdoches August 20, 2018. Jo Ann was born to Chester Thomas and Susie Louise Lee in Jasper, Texas.
Derry George Gartig, 86, also passed away at their Nacogdoches home on March 7, 2019. He was born in Detroit, Michigan to George Herman and Helen Martha Gartig.
Derry and Jo Ann began their life together December 23, 1972. They lived in Houston, Texas where Derry worked and retired from IBM and Jo Ann found her niche with the Museum of Natural Science. After 19 years of the big city, they decided to move to Nacogdoches and begin retired living. But, first, Derry was a Master of Science instructor for Computer Science at Stephen F. Austin University for several years. They enjoyed the small-town atmosphere by attending concerts at the university, frequenting the library, and being close to their beloved cabin on Lake Sam Rayburn. Their shared passion for travel took them all over the U.S. with their two cats, but their favorites were Estes Park, Sanibel Island, and the Platte River area of Michigan. Derry was an avid bridge player with the American Contract Bridge League, of Nacogdoches and Jo Ann enjoyed painting with her friends and the Watercolor East Texas group. She also loved bird watching with a Life List of 484 species.
