Darrell Keith Griffin was born in Chicago, Illinois on April 12, 1947 to Mozel and Lanora Griffin. Darrell was one of ten children born to this union. Three of his siblings preceded him in death, Robert Griffin, Joseph Griffin and Lanora Griffin-Jackson.

Darrell grew up in the Altgeld Gardens community and was known to his friends by the name of "Shaft." He was one of the original members of the popular AG social club, ”The competitors”, located in Chicago Illinois. He was gifted with creativity and had a love of art. In his early years his passion to draw was impeccable and he pass those genes down to his descendants.

In 1965 Darrell joined his Brother on the USS Benner DD807 Navy vessel, out of long beach California; he served his country proudly in the vietnam war before being medically discharged.

In 1967 he married Cynthia Anderson from Chicago, Illinois. To this union he had two daughters, Cherryl Marie Griffin and Keysha Lanora Griffin.

In 1983, he met the love of his life, Dezerine Burt and married her on March 22, 2014. Darrell immediately became the father of her son Jerome Burt and nephew Shannon Johnson. From that union two daughters were born Shayna and Shaunna Griffin.

Darrell believed in family, so he encouraged his family to live a life of compassion, love and unity.

Darrell will be greatly missed by all who loved him. He leaves to cherish his memories, His wife, Dezerine; four daughters, Cherryl Johnson, Keysha Harrell, Shayna and Shaunna Griffin; one daughter in love, Nichelle Vaughn; two sons, Jerome Burt and Shannon Johnson; one daughter-in-law, Ayanna Burt; one son-in-law, Gregory Harrell and one special future son-in law, Shelton Vasser Jr.; a loving mother-in-law, Eluvenia Burt;19 grandchildren;12 Great grandchildren; two brothers, Melvin (Diane) Griffin, and Ernest(Virginia)Griffin; four sisters, Shirley Byrd, Karen(Donald)Raickett, Donna Turner and Yvonne Griffin; (3) brother-in-law, (4) sister-in-law and a host of relatives, nieces, nephews, and friends
