Sandy Johnson, a long-time resident of Harper, Kansas, passed away May 26, 2019 at the age of 68. She was born April 3, 1951 to Art and Marty (Barr) Thorpe in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Growing up in Tulsa, Sandy was involved in Girl Scouts and loved playing softball. She also competed in several beauty pageants and placed runner-up in the Miss Oklahoma Pageant. She graduated from Memorial High School with the class of 1969.

Sandy was blessed with two sons: Jeff, who was born in September of 1973 and then Steve, who was born in September of 1976. Her pride and joys though were the births of her grandchildren: Caitlyn and Cole Owen and Scott, Travis, and Madison Owen.

First working as a secretary and a homemaker, Sandy found her lifelong calling as a nurse. She started working at the Harper Hospital as a CNA and retired as an LPN after 27 years. She truly loved her job and the people she cared for.

On May 20th, 2006 she was united in marriage to Tim Johnson in Harper, Kansas. They enjoyed playing golf and working in the yard and flowerbeds together. Sandy took so much pride in having a beautiful yard. However, her true passion was always golf, where she enjoyed playing in countless tournaments with Tim, her Dad, Art, and a whole host of friends. It was a game she took very seriously, if you ever had the chance to play a round or two with her.

Sandy was a very outgoing individual with a big heart, which led her to be involved in several community organizations over the years. She was involved in ESA, where her chapter helped raise money for St. Jude Children’s Hospital. This was a cause she believed in very deeply and it gave her the chance to meet Danny and Marlo Thomas. She also enjoyed giving Tim advice every year at Christmas time in the decorating of Harper’s downtown park.

If you ever had the chance to meet Sandy, chances are that you are still friends with her to this day. She had a captivating personality and could make friends very easily. She truly loved all of her friends and considered them family.

Sandy was preceded in death by her grandparents, Howard and Nellie Barr and her mother, Marty Thorpe. She is survived by her loving husband, Tim of the home; her father, Art; her sons, Jeff (Cyndi) and Steve; grandchildren: Caitlyn, Cole, Scott, Travis, and Madison; her brother, Steve (Sylvia); nephew, Aric (Anita); niece, Amy; other relatives and numerous friends.
