Bergen was instrumental in the building of the first church in Springfield. He came to Springfield & found a small Presbyterian congregation organized a few months before by a passing missionary. He assisted in forming the Presbytery & first Synod in the state & was the first moderator of each. After his retirement in 1848, he wrote many articles under the pen name of Old Man of the Prairie, which appears on the base of his gravestone.
