Three killed in Chase County collision

Chase County Sheriff

Three men died Friday afternoon after being involved in a two-vehicle accident on U.S. Highway 50 in Chase County.

Chase County Sheriff Rich Dorneker said his office received the report of an accident near mile-post 332 on U.S. Highway 50 east of Strong City at about 3 p.m. Friday afternoon. When emergency crews arrived, it was determined a 2013 Chevy pickup driven by 90-year-old Howard Chapman of Elmdale crossed the center line and struck a 2011 Buick driven by 64-year-old Christopher Lickteig of Aurora, Illinois. Lickteig had a passenger in his vehicle, 89-year-old Melvin Lickteig of Scott City.

The weather may have played a role in the incident as the area was experiencing a severe thunderstorm at the time.

All three were pronounced dead at the scene.

Dorneker said U.S. Highway 50 was closed for approximately 40 minutes following the wreck and was then flagged to one lane by KDOT. Normal traffic was allowed to resume at around 5 p.m. Friday.
