Arneta passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 7, 2017. She was born in Simsboro, Louisiana, on December 31, 1921, to Annie Belle McGuire Phillips and Floyd English Phillips. As the third of four daughters, her formative years were filled with laughter, small-town camaraderie and a healthy mix of mischief. Growing up on a farm served as a launching pad for her culinary talents. She could prepare fresh vegetables like nobody else. Shelling purple-hulled peas was an art form, and her tomato chow chow was coveted by all.
She studied Home Economics at Louisiana Tech University and Elementary Education at Southwest Louisiana University.
It was no wonder that as a pretty young woman she caught the eye of Bob Carnahan. After a double date in Bossier City, Louisiana, they changed partners. Their first solo date was fishing. They married on March 17, 1949. Arneta and Bob shared 56 years together as South Central Bell Telephone Company transferred them around Louisiana and Mississippi. Their favorite spot throughout the years was the New Orleans area. She embraced Cajun cooking like a pro and spending a Saturday afternoon cleaning shrimp was a family event. Her eagerness to enjoy life was not unnoticed by anyone she met.
Her true passion came to life with the birth of her children. Joe Pat was born on March 17, 1951, and this Irish Carnahan family began. Cheryl’s arrival four years later was such a surprise (a boy was expected) that no name had been chosen. The “Cheryl Ann” was a tugboat in a television show at the time (Tugboat Annie) and that seemed like a fine name!
Arneta was a fine woman, a loving wife and mother and friend to many. Her joy was abundant upon the arrival of her grandchildren Michael, Heather, Robert, Philip and Olivia. Six great grandchildren were the icing on the cake - Colton, Ashlyn, Kaylee, Cameron, McKenzie and Cavin. Heather’s husband Adrian Rudd and Michael’s wife Christina have played integral roles in her life. They doted on her and brought many happy moments to her life. Their love was always so obvious.
Arneta is survived by her two children, grandchildren, son-in-law David Shave, sister Polly Tabor, and last but not least, her daughter-in-law Linda Jensen Carnahan. Linda’s love, time, patience and efforts will never be forgotten. Linda treated her mother-in-law as if she were her own mother.
Arneta made it past her 95th birthday and died peacefully in her favorite chair. Just the way she wanted it to happen. Hers was a life well lived and her love is in our hearts forever. As she always said before hanging up the phone, “I love you – Be sweet”. We will Momma.
