Augusta was an invalid from every childhood and suffered from rheumatism that had causes her to lose use of one arm and at times affected her reasoning . On December 17, 1879 at 26 years of age she took her own life by taking strychnine. It was ruled as temporary insanity.
Her funeral was held at the Etchells School house and she was buried in the Hawley Cemetery. In May of 1908 her body was moved Fairview Cemetery in Dansville and put with her parents and one brother and two sisters.
