Jerry B. David, age 70, of Jarrell, passed away peacefully on May 24, 2019.
Visitation will be held on May 27 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at Providence Funeral Home in Taylor. A rosary will be recited at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, May 28 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Corn Hill. A Celebration of Life Mass will be officiated by Father Stephen Nesrsta at 11:00 AM at Holy Trinity Catholic Church followed by burial at Holy Trinity Cemetery. A Reception will be held at Moravian Hall in Cornhill, TX following the committal service in Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery.
Jerry was the oldest of three children born to Jerry W. David and Mary (Cervenka David) Conlee and grew up on a farm near Corn Hill. He completed his elementary education at Holy Trinity Catholic School in Corn Hill. After graduating from Jarrell High School, Jerry earned his Bachelor and Masters Degrees at Texas State University in San Marcos and then pursued a career in Texas public education. His career as an educator began as a junior high school math teacher in Belton ISD. After earning his Masters Degree, he served as an Assistant Principal at Belton ISD and then completed his career as a junior high math teacher in Georgetown ISD before his retirement in May 2002.
Simply put, Jerry’s priorities in life were his faith, his family, and his friends. Over the years, Jerry served on the Holy Trinity Parish Council and was an Extraordinary Eucharistic Minister for over 30 years. His visits as Eucharistic Minister for homebound members of Holy Trinity Catholic Church were special times for Jerry and those he served. He served in the Army National Guard, was past president of the Moravian Club in Corn Hill, past member of the Jarrell Bass Club, past president of Jarrell-Schwertner Water Board, and was serving as Financial Secretary of the Granger Knights of Columbus. In recent years Jerry took on a personal mission of escorting many young Catholic men to various parishes in the Diocese of Austin to stand with them as they earned their first degree and then second and third degrees in the Knights of Columbus.
Jerry’s interests were wide ranging. He enjoyed calling Bingo at the Moravian Club in Corn Hill for many years and in recent years enjoyed working with his fellow Knights of Columbus brothers at Tuesday night Bingo at Ss. and Methodius Parish Hall in Granger. These Tuesday night sessions were followed by chit chat about a wide range of topics and refreshments after Bingo duties were completed. Over the years he enjoyed deer hunting with his buddies, coaching youth baseball, weekend bass fishing tournaments, playing in tarock and domino tournaments, playing pool, and enjoying refreshments with his buddies at Crossroads Cafe in Schwertner and Crossroads in Granger. He also enjoyed taking family and friends on trips to Louisiana so we could try our luck at the slot machines. He was an avid gardner and enjoyed canning pickles and beets and then sharing his garden harvest with family and friends. He spent many evenings and afternoons playing tarocks with Margie Hajda, Edith and Babs Kurtin often playing into the wee hours of the morning. He also tinkered with making wine, jelly, bee keeping and was always happy to help families with organizing funeral lunches.
Jerry was proud of his Czech heritage and enjoyed listening and dancing to Czech music. He enjoyed going to local estate sales and always came home with something of interest. Beginning in 1990, he held annual Tarock Tournaments at the Moravian Hall in Corn Hill and spent many afternoons mowing grass at Moravian Club in Corn Hill. His roots ran deep in Corn Hill and his adventures in Corn Hill gave him great joy.
He was a man that formed friendships with young and old alike. He was also a prankster who for a few years has some people convinced that he was applying for a license in order to have his own radio station which would be called KJRL featuring such topics as knitting with Ms. Kitty and Fishing with Fred. He gave his all in whatever task that presented itself to him. He “did for others” and wanted nothing in return. He was generous, thoughtful, kind, stubborn, private and sometimes gruff. He was a devoted care giver to his mother, his Uncle Pudd and Aunt Chucie and members of the V J Hajda and Kurtin families in Granger.
He is survived by his longtime friend, Theresa Hajda, his sister, Loraine Goode, his sister Mary Ann Bamsch and husband Doug Bamsch, his nephew Bryon Goode, Jr. and wife Lynn, his niece Jennifer Windland and husband Doug, and his nephew Christopher Bamsch as well as four great- nephews and 2 great nieces. He is also survived by many members of the Hajda and Kurtin families that he considered as his honorary nephews and nieces.
Serving as Pall Bearers will be Byron Goode, Jr., Doug Windland, Malcolm Frasier, Austin Snyder, Nicholas Schwertner, Frank Pajestka, Jr., Alan Shirocky, and John Maresh.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Youth Ministry of Holy Trinity Catholic Church at Holy Trinity Catholic Church and the Czech Seminarian Fund at Holy Trinity Catholic Church.
