G. Sylvia Little, 98, of North Andover, died Monday, April 12, 2010, at Lawrence General Hospital. Sylvia Mercier Little was the wife of the Late Gardner C. Little and mother of the late Robert G. Little.
Sylvia, born in Boston, was the daughter of George Z. Mercier and Julia (Ware) Mercier and a loving step-mother Geneva (Gray) Mercier. She was a graduate of Haverhill High School, Class of 1929, and the Anna Jacques Hospital School of Nursing, Newburyport.
She was a Member of Massachusetts State Nursing Association; the Anna Jacques Nurses Alumni; a member of St. Paul's Church; Past President of the Episcopal Church Women; a member and Past Worthy Priestess of Temple Shrine 15; member of Haverhill Shrine 1 Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem; a Past Matron of Lawrence Chapter OES; member of Andover Chapter 187 OES; Past Deputy Grand Matron and Deputy Grand Marshal of the Grand Chapter, OES; member and ex-Regent of Betsy Ross/Samuel Adams Chapter National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution; past Senior President of Samuel Osgood Society Children of the American Revolution; a member of the National Society Women Descendants of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company; Past President of the North Andover Women's Club;, a member of the 10th District Presidents Club; member of North Andover Seniors and National AARP. She received recognition for services for the American National Red Cross in World War II, receiving certificates in Chemical Warfare, Medford Wardens Defense School and instruction in Home Nursing in Lawrence.
She had many hobbies, including her home, sewing, piano, helping on many committees and especially tracing her ancestry to Robert Ware of Dedham who lived in 1637, Massachusetts. She was the first "Women You Should Know" published in the Evening Tribune 1957. During her nursing career, she did private duty in Newburyport, staff duty at Berkeley Home for the Aged, staff duty at Merrimack College and Office Nurse for the late Dr. Rolf C. Norris.
