He was the son of the late Bonnie and Ross Adkins of Montgomery. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Keel and Brenda Toney; and brothers, Richard, Eddie and Pat Adkins.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Cheryl (Swartz) Adkins; two daughters, Ericka McClung of Clendenin and Tara (Justin) Reed of Waldorf, MD; son, Logan Adkins of Charleston; three granddaughters, Kaci Hurley, Zoe Curry and Mackenzie Adkins; great-grandson, Kieran Adams; and great-granddaughters, Aurora and Amara Adkins. He is also survived by his sisters, Sherry Hensley of Montgomery, and Shelia Logan of Florida, and brother, Allen Hensley of Tennessee.
Gary was raised in Smithers and Graduated from Valley High School. After graduation Gary joined the US Army where he spent ten years as well as ten years in the National Guard. After he left the Army, he worked fourteen years as a supervisor for Shawnee Hills and then seventeen years as a supervisor for the WV Division of Culture and History. He will be sadly missed by his loving family and friends.
