Lance Hammers also has been written as Lantz Hammers. He was born 27 May 1853 in West St. Clair Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania to Hiram Gordon Hammer and Sarah Jane (Burkholder) Hammer.

Hiram and Sarah were married 25 Sep 1851 and separated then divorced shortly after their youngest son's birth, Alonzo Edward, who was born on 24 Mar 1861. By 1 Feb 1864 Hiram was married to Phoebe Jane Condon and living in Deerfield, Warren County, Ohio. After Phoebe's death, which occurred on 14 Jan 1876, Hiram moved back to Bedford County, Pennsylvania and married Sarah Bowen Allison about 1877. Hiram and Sarah Bowen (Allison) Hammer's first child born to their union, Albert Raymond Hammer was born 11 Mar 1878.

On 18 Sep 1888, Sarah Jane Burkholder Hammer had married J.H. Ammerman.

Lance was married before 1 Jan 1880. During 1880 he was living in Altoona, Pennsylvania, according to a newspaper article published on 1 Jan 1880, his wife, his servant and himself were sickened by green tea.

In 1884, Lance was still living in Altoona, Pennsylvania but by 1886, he had moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

On 15 Feb 1893 in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania he married Julia Ann Jones. They had four children during this union, two of whom were Sarah A and John Wesley. Julia had two daughters to her previous marriage.

On 12 Feb 1899, Lance's father, Hiram Gordon Hammer, died in Pleasantville, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. He was 69 years old.

Shortly after the birth of their youngest son, John Wesley Hammers, on 26 March 1899, Lance's wife Julia Ann (Jones) Hammers died 19 Apr 1899 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, at the age of 46, after a short illness. She was buried in the Allegheny Cemetery, Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co., PA.

On 5 May 1901 in Pinecroft, Blair County, Pennsylvania, Lance's mother, Sarah Jane (Burkholder) Hammers Ammerman died.

11 Mar 1902 in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, Lance was united in marriage to Isabella Moody.

On 13 Aug 1911 in Donegal Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, John Wesley Hammers, the son of teenaged son of Lance and Julia (Jones) Hammer had died from complications from heart disease. He was buried in Claysville Cemetery, in Claysville, Washington County, Pennsylvania.
