William enlisted on Nov. 28, 1861 and was mustered as a Private into Co. K of the 24th Massachusetts infantry on Dec. 6, 1861. His regiment left Massachusetts on Dec. 9, 1861 and joined Ambrose Burnside's North Carolina expedition, fighting at Roanoke Island in Feb. 1862. The regiment was situated in the Washington-Kinston-New Bern and Goldsboro quadrangle performing guard duty and demonstrated against Confederate forces operating in the area. In the January 1863 they were shifted to the islands off the South Carolina coast and in July Company K was involved in the assault on Battery Wagner, famed for the 54th Massachusetts' endeavors. In September of that year the regiment moved to St. Augustine, FL and remained until the spring when they were shifted to Virginia where they fought at Drewry's Bluff in May 1864 and engaged in siege operations against Petersburg. William and his regiment remained in the area until he and others whose enlistments had expired were mustered out the army on Nov. 28, 1864.

As was befitting of his status as a veteran he was interred in the Army Navy Lot at Mount Hope Cemetery.
