Canadian Statesman. He served as the 7th Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador from October 16, 2000 to February 13, 2001. He graduated from the Memorial University of Newfoundland with BA, B.Ed, and Master of Educational Administration degrees. He served in the educational field before going into politics. In 1979, he was elected to the Newfoundland House of Assembly as member of the Liberal Party of Newfoundland, and was re-elected in 1982 and 1985. He was defeated for re-election in 1989 and went to serve as the Assistant Deputy Minister of Children and Youth Services for the Newfoundland government. In 1993, he was returned to the House of Assembly and went on to be re-elected in 1996 and 1999. During this time, he served as both Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods and Minister of Development and Rural Renewal in the province's government cabinet. In August of 2000, he was appointed Deputy Premier, and two months later, became Premier when his predecessor Brian Tobin decided to return to federal politics. He went on to serve as Premier until February of 2001 when the Liberal party picked Roger Grimes to be their leader and Premier of the province. After leaving office, he tried unsuccessfully to gain a seat in both the federal House of Commons and the provincial House of Assembly. He was appointed by Prime Minister Jean Chretien to the Canadian Transportation Agency in December of 2002. He passed away after a battle with prostate cancer.
