SEDALIA - Jackie Leon Phillips, 89, of Florence, MO, passed away Tuesday, May 21, 2019, at Sylvia G. Thompson Residence Center in Sedalia.
He was born October 15, 1929, in Sedalia, MO, a son of Elbert Harrison "EH" and Jannie (Jones) Phillips. On May 20, 1950, he married Viola D. Brodersen who preceded him in death on June 2, 2013.
Jackie graduated from Syracuse High School. He worked as a machinist for Missouri Pacific Railroad in Kansas City for 15 years. He purchased the family farm in 1963 and raised livestock, mostly cattle and turkeys, semi-retiring in 1991.
Jackie enjoyed farm life and especially hosting family and church gatherings, making homemade ice cream and playing sports; volleyball, softball and horseshoes. He was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, and in later years, he enjoyed fishing. Jackie enjoyed playing cards and often played till the wee hours of the morning. He was also a charter member of the Bo-Ski-Fun Bunch from Kansas City, MO. Jackie was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church where he was an active deacon for over 30 years.
Survivors include one son, Robert W. (Vida) Phillips of Florence, two daughters, Cathy L. (Jackson) MacFedries of Smithton, Donna J. (John) Reynolds of Florence; a daughter-in-law, Rose Phillips of Florence; 16 grandchildren, Celeste Sunshine Crews (Jon) of Memphis, TN, Walker C. Phillips, of Florence, Preston R. Phillips (Michelle) of Florence, Bobbi Jo Hagerman (Cory) of Tipton, Quenton W. Phillips (Krista) of Otterville, Trenton G. Phillips of Florence, Jeremy Ellison (Cheryl) of Sedalia, Jason Ellison (Velda) of Sedalia, Adam Nevels (Brenda) of Sedalia, Christopher Nevels of Sedalia, Tasha Dove (Marvin) of Green Ridge, Seth Nevels (Mary) of Sedalia, Christopher Harvey (Jennifer) of Marshall, Chadley Harvey (Kim) Lenexa, KS, Chaundra Brodersen (Donald) of Otterville, Caryn Thomas (Will) of Bunceton; 41 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Joan Egner of Sedalia; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to both of his parents and his wife Viola of 63 years he was preceded in death by a son Ron Phillips on May 5, 2019; one grandson, Clint Harvey in January of 2003; three brothers, Bud, Darrel and Paul Phillips; three sisters, Neoma Twyman, Helen Lewis and Alice Kuhlman.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 24, 2019, at Mt. Olive Baptist Church near Florence with Rev. Gary Payne and Rev. Paul Larimore officiating.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, May 23, 2019, at Heckart Funeral Home in Sedalia.
Casket bearers will be grandsons, Walker Phillips, Preston Phillips, Quenton Phillips, Trenton Phillips, Jeremy Ellison, Jason Ellison, Adam Nevels, Christopher Nevels and Seth Nevels. Honorary bearers will be Chris Harvey, Chad Harvey, Sunshine Crews, Bobbi Jo Hagerman, Tasha Dove, Chaundra Brodersen and Caryn Thomas.
Burial will be in Mt. Olive Cemetery near Florence.
