Waynesville, Edith Stamey Edwards, 99, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 21, 2019, at her residence, less than one month before her 100th birthday

A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late George E. Stamey and Flora Murray Stamey. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, David C. Edwards, who died in 2010; one daughter Patricia “Patsy” Moore; two brothers, Howard and Wayne Stamey; one grandson Michael Nanney; and one son-in-law, Kenneth E. Lanning. She was a graduate and star basketball player of Bethel High School and a graduate of Brevard College.

Edith was a selfless, kind, generous person with a servant’s heart, who excelled at many talents. Her love in action for her family and friends was well known throughout the community. Her hospitality and home cooked meals were enjoyed by many people for many years. After raising her children, she taught sewing and tailoring at Haywood Community College for over 25 years and enjoyed the interaction with her students. Edith was an active member of Bethel United Methodist Church. Over the years, she served as VBS Director, Missionary Society Leader, sang in the choir, and served on various committees. Her home was always open for church and community gatherings and she always went above and beyond to make things special.

Edith is survived by one daughter, Evelyn Lanning, of Waynesville; one brother, Neil Stamey, of Canton; one son-in-law, Sonny Moore, of Waynesville; three grandchildren, Julie (Patrick) Brittain, of Boone, Kathleen Lanning, of Waynesville, and Kevin Lanning, of King, NC; one great-grandson, Jacob Brittain; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2019 at Bethel UMC with the Reverend David Russell officiating and burial following in Bethel Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends after the burial service in the Fellowship Hall and everyone is invited to enjoy the meal provided.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Bethel UMC, 804 Sonoma Road, Waynesville, NC 28786.
