Matthew J. Coleman
March 15, 1968 – May 21, 2019

Matthew John Coleman, 51, of Boone passed away Tuesday, May 21, 2019, at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Since December Matthew suffered a gradual decline from a disease that was not diagnosed until April. He had a viral infection that caused a rare condition called PML. In the words of 4-year-old William, “a bad germ was punching daddy’s brain” and that is why he could not talk or walk.

Matthew was born March 15, 1968 in Boone to John and Lelia (Liden) Coleman. At the age of ten, his family moved to Sioux City, and he graduated from East High in 1986. Some of his work experience included computers, driving, property inspections, and attorney.

Matthew loved his country. He served in the U.S. Air Force active duty from 1990 to 1993, was also in the Air Guard for numerous years, and volunteered with the Civil Air Patrol (CAP), which is an auxiliary of the Air Force.

Matthew loved learning. He earned an associate degree from WIT in 1998, a bachelor’s degree (online) from Utah Valley University in 2010, and a law degree from Creighton University in 2013 at the age of 45. He also learned to fly, earning his private pilot’s license.

Matthew loved language and storytelling. As a child he read the dictionary for pleasure. In high school he started a fiction novel that he finished as an adult. In 2016 he self-published it. He also spent hours in his youth playing Dungeons and Dragons, which he later shared with his children, nieces, and nephews. Prose, poetry, or even ideas for stories came easily to him.

Matthew loved music and movies. He played the piano, was a percussionist, and prepared the music for his mom’s dance classes. He was a big fantasy and science fiction fan. No matter the music or movie, his favorite past time was sharing them with his family.

Matthew loved his family. He first met Greta Menting in 1990. They were married August 23, 1997 in the Chicago, Ill. Temple. They were blessed with seven children: Elizabeth, John, Brendan, Seth, Adelaide, William, and Mia. Most of what Matthew did focused on them: school sports, concerts, plays, family trips, movie premiers, etc. He volunteered with Cub Scouts, PTA, book fairs, and whatever else his wife needed help with. He was always there for his family.

Matthew loved the Lord. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in a variety of positions. His testimony of Jesus Christ guided him in all he did.

Matthew is preceded in death by his infant daughter Adelaide and mother-in-law Linda Menting. He is survived by his wife Greta Coleman of Boone, IA; six children: Elizabeth, John, Brendan, Seth, William and Mia Coleman all of Boone, IA; his parents John and Lelia Coleman of Boone, IA; his siblings: Lisa (Keith) Davis of Boone, IA, Leah (Marcy Anderson) Coleman of North Liberty, IA, and Joseph (Katrina) Coleman of Olathe, KS; Father-in-law Marvin Menting of Everly, IA; and numerous extended family.

Funeral Services will be 10:00 am, Saturday, June 1, 2019 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1516 22nd Street, Boone, Iowa. Visitation with the family present to greet friends will be from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Friday, May 31, 2019 at Schroeder-Stark-Welin Funeral Home, 609 7th Street, Boone, Iowa.
