James Arthur Burcham, age 74 of Dover, Delaware passed away December 22, 2018 at the Hospice Home in Milford, DE. Jim was born on March 12, 1944 in Wilmington, DE, the son of Arthur & Hazel Burcham.

Mr. Burcham dedicated his life to education and helping others. He graduated from William Penn High School in 1962. He received degrees in Agricultural Education and Special Education from the University of Delaware. After graduation his life long commitment to training included but is not limited to several distinctions including: certifications in sign language, certifications in rehabilitation settings and certifications in managing others. His career included but was not limited to work in Vocational Rehabilitation for the State of Delaware as an Assistant Director, a Special Education Teacher at Smyrna High School and the Director of S.H.A.P.E., a program he initiated for “at-risk students.”

His dedication to others afforded him many awards and recognitions. In 1969, the National Rehabilitation Association acknowledged him for his dedication to handicapped individuals. In 1989, The American Legion Walter J. Fox Post 2 recognized Mr. Burcham for his work as a Cub Master and Boy Scout Leader. Of himself Jim said, “I’m reasonably competent, helpful, friendly and have an odd view of the world. My sense of humor is a couple clicks to the left-of-center, and fairly quick.” He lived his life by the motto, “ Life is too short not to have a good time!” His friends will remember his trademark saying, ”IGOTTAGO!!!”

Mr. Burcham’s hobbies and interests included deer-hunting, boating, being involved in Scouting and loved being with families. He was a rover at Dover Downs for 10 years. His passion was his 1971 Karman Ghia that he bought new and his 1963 Chevy truck he restored. His love of cars allowed him to make many friends in various car and truck clubs.
