Seeking God's direction and guidance, he joined the Sweet Branch Baptist Church, in Govan where he was a faithful member and Deacon. He later moved his membership to be with his wife at Brown Chapel Baptist Church in Barnwell where he continued to serve as a faithful member and Deacon. His favorite scriptures are Psalm 27 and 91.
He attended the Hilda School in Hilda and worked for Rheem Manufacturing for many years before retiring.
Deacon Hicks will be remembered for the love he had for his family and friends and he will be missed by all those who knew and loved him.
He was married to his loving and devoted wife, Edna Mae Phoenix Hicks, for over 68 years.
Besides his parents and grandparents, he is preceded in death by two daughters, Deloris Hicks Jones and Denise Hicks; four brothers, Israel, Russell, Lionell, and Buster Hicks, and four sisters, Rebecca, Edith, Evelyn, and Shirley Hicks.
Our Heavenly Father called him from labor to reward on Sunday, April 21, 2019, at his home in Barnwell.
He leaves to cherish his beautiful memory:a loving and devoted wife, Edna Mae Phoenix Hicks of the home in Barnwell; six children, Betty Ruth Hicks of Barnwell, Deacon Nathaniel (Carmen) Hicks Jr. of Barnwell, Edna Ruth (Thomas) Kennedy of Columbia, Walter Leon (Loretta McPlatts) Hicks of Barnwell, Daniel (Phyllis) Hicks of Hephzibah, Ga., and Donald (Samantha) Hicks of Spartanburg; fourteen grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Mildred Phoenix of West Palm Beach, Fla.; one brother-in-law, Charles Phoenix of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and sympathizing friends.
