Kathleen Leffel Monk, 96 of North Tazewell, VA passed away at Noon on Tuesday, May 21, 2019 at her home. Born February 22, 1923 at Gratton, VA, she was a daughter of the late Walter G. Leffel, Sr. and Lucille Jones Leffel and was a lifelong resident of Tazewell County, living in the same house by the Clinch River for 74 years.

Kathleen was a member of Tazewell Christian Church where she had been very active, serving as a Sunday School teacher, serving on countless committees, chairman of many of those, also serving as a Deacon for many years and then as an Elder. She was very active in the Christian Women's Fellowship for over 60 years.

Kathleen was an elementary school teacher in the Tazewell County School System, devoting herself to teaching children for thirty-three years before retiring in 1985. Most of her teaching career was spent in the third grade at North Tazewell Elementary. In 1972, she was listed in Outstanding Elementary Teachers of America. During her career, she was recognized by North Tazewell School as an honorary life member of the Virginia State P.T.A. She was also a member of the T.E.A., N.E.A. and Delta Kappa Gamma Xi Chapter.

Kathleen was an active community member all her life. She grew up as a member of the 4-H Club and became an All Star in the organization. She was a member of the Jeffersonville Woman's Club, Crab Orchard Museum, CART, Riverside Garden Club, and Tazewell Community Hospital Auxiliary. Kathleen enjoyed playing bridge and was a charter member of The Monday Bridge Club, formed in the early 1960's.

Kathleen and Jay were married for 49 years and spent many happy days rearing and celebrating their family. They were generous and loyal to their family and community. They pledged financial support to the construction of Crab Orchard Museum and the Tazewell Community Hospital with a leaf on the memory tree. In recent years, Kathleen generously supported the construction of The Four Seasons YMCA and continued to give memorials. She enjoyed swimming in their pool for many years.

Kathleen was an advocate of recycling, promoting it among her friends, organizations, and her students. She served on The Tazewell County Litter Control Board.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jay Jasper Monk; daughter in law, Gail Monk; sister, Louise Leffel Wallace, Louise's husband, Conley; brothers, Major H.S. (Sam) Leffel and W.G. Leffel, Jr. and wife, Jean; niece, Mikel Wallace Kinser.

Survivors include her daughter, Vicki Siptack, her husband, Joe, grandson, Charles Gambill; great grandsons, Jacob and Taylor Gambill, great granddaughter, Charlee Jo Gambill all of San Antonio, TX; daughter, Sandra Sinclair and husband Tommy O'Brian, devoted ex-husband, Doug Sinclair who remained a part of her family and only granddaughter, Whitney Kathleen Sinclair all of Richmond, VA; son, Ronald Monk of Tazewell, VA and grandson, Jay Monk of Asheville, NC; many special nieces and nephews, and a caring church family. She was very thankful for her devoted friend and caregivers.

The family will receive friends from 1-2 PM Saturday, May 25, 2019 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home in Tazewell, VA where funeral services will be conducted at 2 PM with Pastor Nathan Thomas officiating. Burial will follow at Maplewood Cemetery in Tazewell, VA.
