After graduating from Oshkosh High School, she attended and graduated from the Oshkosh Teachers College. She began her teaching career at Rawson Elementary School in South Milwaukee. Upon moving back to Oshkosh she taught first grade at Rose C. Swart Elementary School. Betty took summer classes and earned her master’s degree from the University of Colorado-Boulder. When Swart School closed she became an elementary education professor at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh until her retirement.
Betty was a lifelong member of Trinity Episcopal Church and a member of ECW (Episcopal Church Women).
Some of the many organizations she was active in include: AAUW-Oshkosh (50 years), AAUW book club, Delta Kappa Gamma-Epsilon Chapter, Paine Art Center docent, and Winnebago County Retired Teachers.
In her spare time she enjoyed gardening, playing bridge, knitting, and travel.
Betty is survived by her brother William (Bill) Overton and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her sister Mary Jane Overton; brothers, Thomas (Patricia), James (Lydia), Paul, John, and George (Beatrice) Overton; sister-in-law Lila Overton; and nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held Friday, May 24, 2019 from 11 AM to 1 PM at Trinity Episcopal Church.
On Saturday, May 25, 2019 a visitation will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church from 11 AM until the time of service at noon. Father Chris Arnold will be officiating. Burial will take place in Plummer Cemetery.
