Johann Frederick Beck served in the Civil War 1 Oct 1861 in Missouri. He was mustered into the K 17th Regiment Missouri Volunteers as a Private. He was discharged from the military on 15 Dec 1864 in Saint Louis Missouri.

He, his parents and siblings immigrated to the U.S. arriving 31 May 1852 from Bremen, Germany to New Orleans on the Ship Olbers, then up the Mississippi on a Steamboat where his mother died. She was buried on an island in the middle of the Mississippi River and they landed in Guttenburg, Iowa.

Johann married his wife, Dorothea M Baade, after the Civil War 13 Mar 1865 in Garnavillo, Clayton, Iowa.

Religion: Luthern

They have 5 children, all born in Clayton County, Iowa.
From Iowa they eventually migrated to Waseca County, Minnesota following the Beck families.
