John Rich was the son of William Henry Rich and Mary (Blake) Rich of Maidstone, Vermont. He was the grandson of German immigrant Johannes Reich. John married Releaf Fletcher Jennison and they had six children (three girls and three boys).

According to the New Hampshire Death & Disinterment Records, 1754-1947, he passed away on September 30, 1845 in Manchester, NH and cause of death was listed as Typhoid Fever. His oldest daughter Christina died 11 days later in Manchester, NH and her cause of death was listed as fever.

According to the Archives and Records Management Officer in Manchester, NH, both father and daughter were buried in Manchester's Valley Cemetery.
