Obit: Forrest City Times-Forrest City, Arkansas: Died at her home in Forrest City, Ark., Jan.8,1888, of pneumonia. Mrs.N.E.Prewett, aged fifty four years, ten months and seventeen days. The remains were interred in the Forrest City Cemetery Monday afternoon, the funeral services being conducted at the residence by Rev.W.H.Osborne, of the Baptist church. The subject of this sketch was born in St.Francis county Feb.25,1833, and when sixteen years of age, was married to F.M.Prewett. In 1863, she joined the Baptist church, thus having been a member twenty-five years. During her life she gave birth to nine children, two of whom preceded her to their home in heaven. She leaves a husband; also a member of the same church, and seven children, three brothers, Van Buren, F.J. and G.A. Izard-one sister, Mrs.E.C.Dye, and a host of warm and lifelong friends to grieve over her sudden demise. May God comfort them is our prayer.

Frank M. Prewett, one of the oldest and most respected merchants of Forrest City, was born in Bedford County, Tennessee, November 4, 1827, and at the age of sixteen went to Texas and volunteered in the Mexcan War, under Capt. James Arnold and Col. Albert Sidney Johnston. He particpated in the battles Monterey and Buena Vista, receiving an honorable discharge at the end of two years. On his way home he stopped at Mount Vernon, and then and there became ensnared in cupid's coils, yielding up his affections to the charms of Miss N. E. Izard. Ten days after they met she wore his engagement ring, and eight months later they were married. Mr. Prewett located at Mount Vernon and engaged in the grocery business, and notwithstanding that he started with very little capital, he possessed at the breaking out of war, a large plantation and twenty-nine slaves. He enlisted in Capt. Mallory's company as first lieutenant during the civil strife, and was promoted while at Cotton Plant to the office of captain. His health giving way necessitated his resignation, which took place in the northern part of Arkansas, inflammorty rheumation, caused by exposure, rapidly making inroads upon his usual health. At the close of the war he found his fortune all gone , and many debts previously contracted staring him in the face. His slaves remained with him, but the expense of keeping them was much more than they could possibly liquidate. One morning Uncle Frank (as he is familiary called) was viewing his gloomy situation, naturally becoming more and more despondondent, when he was accosted by Mr. J. H. Cole, an acquaintence of many years, who proposed that they go to Madison and enter into business, Mr. Prewett not to furnish any capital. The result was the establishing of a mercantile establishment under the name of Cole & Prewett. After a few months Mr. Prewett discovered something which he considered more profitable, and desired a dissolution of the partnership, his share of the profits being $1,900. Mr Cole presented him with a fine horse and saddle, which he traded for a small box house, the first house erected on the present site of Forrest City, and since converted into a saloon. Here, in connection with Col. Izard, he amassed a fortune in the grocery business, while the Little Rock & Memphis was being built. They afterward failed for $45,00 and was obliged to dispose of a large amount of real estate in order to cancel their indebtedness. The 1850 Arkansas Census listed a Francis M. Prewett 23 and his wife Elizabeth N. 17 as residing in Franks Township, St. Francis County, Arkansas. Francis was listed as a grocery keeper. Francis (Frank?) Prewett was a niegbhor of both the families of Mark W. Izard and Gabriel J. Izard both farmers. Later Frank had a son he named Mark W. Prewett, perhaps named for Mark W. Izard. Although I haven't found a connection yet, I am convinced that our subject Elizabeth N. Izard is related to Mark W. Izard.
The 1860 Arkansas Census listed Frank M. Prewett 33 and his wife, Elizabeth 28 as operating a farm in Franks Township, St. Francis County, Arkansas. Frank's real estate holdings were valued at $6,000 and his personal property at $8,900. Children; John M. 8, Mark W. 6 and Thomas E. 3.
The 1870 Arkansas Census listed F. M. Prewett 41 and his wife, Nancy E. 37 as operating a farm in Franks Township. St. Francis County, Arkansas. F. M. Frank's real estate holdings were valued at $5,000 and his personal property at $2,500. Children; John M. 19, Mark W. 16, Thomas E. 13, Blanche 6, Joshua 6 and Cora A. 2. The sons, John M and Mark W. had personal property valued at $100 each.
The Arkansas 1880 Census lists Frank M Prewett 52 and his wife, Nancy E. 45 as residing in Forrest City, Madison Township, St. Francis County. Frank is listed as a farmer. Also listed in the household are their children; Blanche 16 yrs, *Erastus 22 yrs, James O. 14 yrs, Mary E. 12 yrs, George Emma 7 yrs, Frank 4 yrs. NOTE: *Thomas Erastus' headstone indicates that he was born in the year 1855.
Frank Prewett, died or buried 11/6/14, 87 yrs, no other dates, buried in Section 3, Forrest City Cemetery, St. Francis County, Arkansas. See page 26, volume 1, The St. Francis County Cemetery Records compiled by Kathleen S. Bell.
