"DEATH OF AN AUNT OF "ALF" AND "BOB" TAYLOR.

The funeral of Mrs. Eva E. C. Aiken, who died at the home of her son-in-law, Dr. Charles E. Campbell, No. 314 East Eighteenth st., on Thursday night, will be held at the Church of the Strangers on Monday, and the burial will be in Greenwood. She is an aunt of Alfred Taylor, the Republican candidate for Governor of Tennessee last fall, and his brother Robert L. Taylor, Democrat, who was the successful candidate for the same position. She was a sister of Congressman N. G. Taylor, who has been dead some time. Mrs. Aiken was seventy years old and a descendant of one of the most prominent Southern families. Her celebrated nephews will be at the funeral."

The deceased was born and raised in Carter county, Tenn., and was the widow of the late Col. Jno. A. Aiken, Jr., of the Confederate Army, and aunt of Gov. Taylor. - Rristol Reporter."

NOTE: From other newspaper articles it lists three daughters survive her.

1850 Census (3 Dec 1850) - District 6, Carter Co., Tennessee: Charles K. Gillespie (Head - age 38), Evaline E. C. (Wife - age 32), Children; James P. T. (age 12), Cordelia M. (age 8), Virginia (age 6), and Ugenia W. (age 8 months).

Article is about Supreme Court case - Evaline E. C. Gillespie vs. A. B. Warford - To set aside a deed of conveyance executed by her (1st) husband, Charles K. Gillespie, under a power of attorney to sell land inherited from her parents (signed by Eva and her two brothers, Nathaniel G. and Alfred M. A. Taylor, on 13 Jun 1849) from her made during overture. The payment for the land wasn't paid in full.
". . . Subsequently in April, 1850 [sic], the attorney in fact, Charles K. Gillespie abandoned his wife, and she afterward filed her bill in the chancery court at Jonesboro for a divorce, on the grounds of malicious absence. The bill was heard and, on the 14th of May, 1859, a decree pronounced dissolving the bonds of matrimony, and restoring her to all the rights and privileges of a feme sole; thereupon this bill was filed, to set aside the conveyance executed by her husband and attorney in fact, during her coverture, so far as her rights were affected by it, and for partition of the land. . . . . "

NOTE: 1850 Census 3 Dec 1850 lists Charles K. Gillespie and Eva still living together.

1860 Census - Jonesboro, Washington Co., Tennessee: Eva C. Gillespie (age 40), Cordelia (19), Virginia W. (age 16), Eugenia W. (age 10).

Tennessee marriage record: John A. Aiken Jr. and Mrs. E. C. Gillespie, 18 Jul 1861, Washington, Tennessee.

1870 Census - Ward 15, District 13, New York City, New York: Eva Aiken (age 55) - Private Boarding House, Cordelia Aiken (age 28?), Virginia Baldwin (age 26?), Eugenia Aiken (age 20), all born in Tennessee.

1880 Census - East Orange, Essex Co., New Jersey: Eva Aiken (age 63), living with her son-in-law Charles Campbell (age 38 - Physician) and daughter Eugenie (Gillespie) Campbell (age 27).

Possible burial location - there is a Green-Wood (AKA Greenwood) cemetery in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York.
