PORTIA M. MURPHY - age 52 of Stamford died on Thursday, September 6, 2007 at Stamford Hospital after courageously battling ovarian cancer. She was born in Saint Matthews, South Carolina on June 18, 1955 to the late Paul E Murphy Sr., and the late Lula Mae Clay.
"Aunt Po-Po" as she was affectionately called by family and friends, graduated from Stamford High School in 1973. She continued her education at Norwalk Community College where she earned her Associates Degree in Liberal Arts.
Her first job was working for TomBrock corporation where she stayed for ten years. Portia recently retired from the United State Postal Service after 21 years of dedicated service as a mail carrier at Barry Place Station. She was a member of National Association for Letter Carriers, branch 60 where she was a long time trustee. Portia was a member of Union Baptist Church in Stamford.
She was a no nonsense down to earth person who's greatest joy was her family, especially her nephews and nieces. Her favorite pass time was watching and cheering for the New York Mets. To know and love her was truly a gift.
Portia leaves to cherish the memories of her life to be shared by one brother, Paul E. Murphy Jr. of Manchester, CT; two sisters Lena M. Paris of Stamford, CT, and Deirdre Murphy Cheeseboro (James) of Stamford, CT, two nieces, four nephews, several aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
Visiting hours are Tuesday September 11, 2007, from 6-8 p.m. at Downers Funeral Home, 31 Stillwater Ave, Stamford. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday September 12, 2007 from 10-11 a.m. at Union Baptist Church 805 Newfield Ave, Stamford where the Rev. Dr. Robert W. Perry is Pastor. Funeral services will immediately follow at the church. Burial will follow at Spring Grove Cemetery, Darien.
