There will be a funeral service for Sheryl on Saturday May 18, 2019 at 3 PM at Calvert & Metzler Memorial Home in Bloomington. Pastor Joe Culpepper will officiate. There will be a visitation Friday May 17, 2019 from 5-7 PM at the Memorial Home. Interment will be in Mansfield Cemetery in Mansfield.
Sheryl was born to Roy and Barbara Gregory Smith on July 24, 1955 in Bloomington. She is survived by her parents Bill (Barbara) Johnson of Bloomington, her son Rylan Kelley of Normal, and two sisters Kim Johnson and Deb (Gary Strunk) Smith of Bloomington. She was preceded in death by her father Roy and one stepbrother Ray Johnson.
Sheryl worked nearly forty years for Eureka Company in Materials Handling. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Bloomington. She loved to travel and was very active in Pickleball.
Actively involved in women’s competitive softball for many years, Sheryl organized annual tournaments held locally for a number of years. Following her retirement Sheryl was exposed to the game of PickleBall and became quite a fanatic. Friends referred to her as the “Ambassador of PickleBall” and woman who helped build Bloomington/Normal pickleball. The B-Town Throwdown Tournament held in March was dedicated to Sheryl with her famous “Just One More” and “Never Enough” (pickleball) immortalized on tournament T-shirts.
Sheryl was a woman who had an incredible circle of friends. To know her was to love her. And her friends were loyal and supportive throughout Sheryl’s cancer journey.
Her family will miss her as the “touchpoint” who kept in contact with everyone and made the peace when needed.
Memorial contributions may be left to the family to purchase park benches at local PickleBall courts in Sheryl’s memory.
