Ben Arthur Shaeffer was born to Benjamin Woodrow Shaeffer and Marie Elizabeth Perkins at the Long Beach Naval Hospital.

He grew up in Long Beach and Anaheim before moving to San Bernardino. He graduated from San Bernardino High School in 1954. He then attended San Bernardino Valley College and transferred to California State at Fullerton. He graduated with his B.A. in 1965.

While at Cal State he met my mother Barbara, and they were married Aug. 15, 1965. They made their home in Beuna Park for a short time then moved to Costa Mesa.

While in Costa Mesa they ran an antique shop out of their garage and published a newsletter (later magazine) on collectible glass called "The Rainbow Review" then later named "The Glass Review."

I arrived in late 1970 and am the only child of my parents. I have fond memories of my dad taking me to the beach. I used to watch him play chess in our garage and listen to music with him. Sometimes I would even stand on his feet and we would dance.

My dad was a Chess Expert and a very intelligent man. He was quiet on the outside but had a good sense of humor.
After his divorce from my mother, he went on permanent disability.

In his spare time he would stay busy playing chess, reading history books, collecting stamps and coins, he would do statistics on horse races and place a few small wagers. He liked to keep up with current events and enjoyed music. He most importantly liked to read his Bible.

In 1983 he found a very special friend and companion, Marga Ivie. She preceded him in death in 1998. She convinced him to accecpt Jesus Christ as his savior. They are now resting side by side in eternity.

It appeared that Dad had a heart attack shortly after receiving Birthday wishes from his brother John. He was found lying on the floor with the phone nearby. I never did get to talk to Dad that day. I always waited until late at night to call him as we are both night owls. I am just thankful he got to talk to John. John is a terrific brother and uncle and I don't know what I would have done without him and his wife Susan and my fiance Terry during that terrible time.

He leaves behind to remember him fondly, his daughter Kymberly Shaeffer-Winkler; his grandson, Christian Winkler;
his brother and siter-in-law, John and Susan Shaeffer; three nephews, Danny, Doug and Dale Shaeffer; cousin Barbara Deacon; special friend Margaret Mercurio; his care-taker, Rose and a host of other friends.

Thank you to my dear friend Carmen Adams for sponsoring my dad's memorial and to Barbara LeClaire for the cemetery photo. (((hugs))

The Lord is my Shepherd. I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul; He leadeth me in the path of righteousness for His name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the prescence of mine enemies; thou annointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
