Leon LeCount Harrison was born on November 19, 1929 to the late William and Sylvia Harrison in Washington, DC, and departed this life after a brief illness on March 31, 2017 at Doctor’s Community Hospital. Leon was baptized at the age of 10 years old by the late Reverend C. T. Murray, Pastor of the Vermont Avenue Baptist Church.

He was married for 59 years to the former Janette M. Brooks, on September 18, 1959. From this union, they had a son Mark L. Harrison and from a former marriage son Ronald F. Harrison and daughter Cassandra D. Harrison.  He raised two step children Conrad D. Parker and Ruth Kappy Majekodunmi (Karen).

Mr. Harrison was educated in the DC Public School System and served briefly in the U.S. Navy.  He was employed in the U. S. Patent Office in the Drafting Division.  After leaving the Patent Office Leon entered the private sector work force as a credit and legal collections specialist, working for many downtown stores in the credit department.  He was made Vice President of the Franklin Investment Company, was Store Manager of Certified T.V. and Furniture Company, and was a Collection Supervisor for Central Charge Service Department.  Leon founded the Credit and Collection Department for Southern Maryland Management Company, from which he retired in 1994.

Mr. Harrison received many awards and accolades for his work in the business community and from the State of Maryland and Prince George’s County, to include the Governor’s Citation, State of Maryland; Proclamation, Prince George’s County; Board Appointment by Gov. Parris Glendening; Volunteer of the Year Award from the Maryland Association of Community Action Agencies, a Certificate of Appreciation from the Prince George’s County Court, and a Certificate of Recognition from the Maryland Head Start Association. He served on the Board of Director’s for the United Communities Against Poverty, Inc. (UCAP) for 19 years; 11 of those years he served as President, receiving many awards during his tenure.

Mr. Harrison at a young age had a passion for classical music, anthems and jazz.  He also could be seen tapping his foot to songs from the Big Band era. He was a long-time member of First Baptist Church of Deanwood and sang with the Senior Choir, for over 50 years and with the Spiritual Echo’s Male Chorus. He always gave credit to his faith in God by stating “He’s come this far by faith”.  He enjoyed family gatherings during the holiday, and was famous for his 4th of July backyard cookouts, where he was the ultimate “Grill Master”.

He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife Janette M. Harrison, sons Reverend Ronald Harrison (Jeanette), Mark Harrison and daughter Cassandra Harrison, step son Reverend Conrad Parker (Diana) and step daughter Ruth Kappy Majekodunmi (Oluwatoyin).  Six Grandchildren, Melissa Tapscott (Alvin), Anita Walls, Ronnette Harrison, Tiffany Adams, David, Michael, and Emmanuel Majekodunmi; three great-grandchildren Melanie and Alayna Tapscott, and Michael Adams (Loran).
