Robert P. Walling, 84, of Bend, Oregon passed away peacefully Saturday, December 12, 2015.
He was born on December 17, 1930 in San Diego, California. The son of William Henry Walling and Eileen Bernyce “O’Keefe” Walling. He is survived by his wife, Claire Louise “Smith” Walling, of 62 years, their three children, Kathleen Lundy, Marjory Bowles and David Walling, and fifteen grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Lauren Bowles.
He served in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps for twenty-eight years stationed in the U.S., Okinawa, and Argentina. He was decorated with: Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal w/1*, Rifle Expert Shooters Badge, and Pistol Expert Shooters Badge.
He was ordained to the Order of Permanent Deacon of the Roman Catholic Church on May 25, 1985 by Bishop Leo T. Maher of the Diocese of San Diego. He also served in this capacity in the Archdiocese of Kansas City and the Diocese of Baker (Eastern Oregon).
He loved travelling with Claire to the scenic areas in the western U.S. and finally decided to “retire” in the beautiful area of Bend, Oregon.
As a beloved husband, father, and friend, he will be missed.
A Rosary and Mass will be held on Monday, December 21st at St. Francis Church, 2450 NE 27th St., Bend, Oregon at 11:30AM.
