Professional Football Coach. He served as the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs from 1999 to 2000. His lengthy association with the sport began at the University of Oregon, where he played at the line back and place kicker positions. He remained at Oregon where he initiated his lengthy coaching career, initially as a defensive lines coach in 1969. Following stops at Arkansas, Stanford and California, he rose to the professional ranks in 1981, as a defensive coordinator with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League. He moved on to the National Football League in 1982 as a defensive line coach under Frank Kush with the Baltimore Colts and would go on to have stints with the San Diego Chargers and Los Angeles Raiders. He succeeded Marty Schottenheimer as head coach of the Kansas Chiefs in 1999 following four seasons of serving as defensive coordinator and guided the team to a 9-7 record (1999). He later had additional coaching experience with the Tennessee Titans, a return to Kansas City and the Detroit Lions before retiring in 2017.
