Actress, Singer. Born Doris Mary Ann Kappelhoff, she began her career as a big band singer in 1939. Her first hit "Sentimental Journey" was recorded in 1945. Her movie career began in 1948 in the film "Romance on the High Seas." Her early MGM career included "Calamity Jane" (1953) with Howard Keel, "Young At Heart" (1954) with Frank Sinatra, and Alfred Hitchcock's "The Man Who Knew Too Much" with Jimmy Stewart. She starred in a series of romantic comedies with Rock Hudson and James Garner in the 1950s and 1960s: "Pillow Talk" (1959), Lover Come Back (1961), "Move Over Darling" (1963), and "Send Me No Flowers" (1964). She starred in a television show "The Doris Day Show" from 1968 to 1973. She is perhaps best known for the song "Que Sera, Sera" which she first sang in "The Man Who Knew Too Much" and would later become the theme song for her television show. She recorded over 650 songs and appeared in over 40 films. In the 1970s she became an animal activist and established the Doris Day Pet Foundation, now known as the Doris Day Animal Foundation, in 1978. Its initial purpose was to find homes for unwanted animals. In 1987 she formed the Doris Day Animal League, a non-profit citizens' lobbying organization, to reduce the pain and suffering of animals through legislative initiatives and education. She died at the age of 97, leaving instructions to be buried with no funeral, no memorial, and no grave marker.
