James Ray Weedman, 71, of North Platte, died May 10, 2019, at home surrounded by his family

Jim was born Feb. 13, 1948, to Hubert James and Hattie Sophie (Lange) Weedman in North Platte, where he grew up. After he was done going to school, Jim worked as a brick layer for Thurston Allen and later Scott & McClellen Masonry. In 1968, Jim was drafted into the U.S. Army and served until his honorable discharge in 1970.

After basic training, Jim came home to marry his sweetheart, Donna Jean Gosnell. They were married on Oct. 27, 1968, then moved to Newport News, Virginia, where he finished his time with the Army. Following his discharge, they returned to North Platte to settle down and raise their children.

Jim went back to being a brick layer, and then worked for Harris News Agency. In 1985, he bought a Rainbow Carpet Cleaning franchise and the family moved to Kearney for a short time. After he sold the business in 1989, they returned to North Platte. Jim went to work at Larry’s Glass before hiring on with the Union Pacific Railroad. He started as a switchman then became an engineer before retiring in 2013.

Jim loved being outside golfing, elk hunting, fishing or camping, and had a love for horses. He also enjoyed playing softball and played until he was 52 years old.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Hubert and Hattie; sister, Charlotte Griesfeller; brothers Billy and Hubert Weedman; and his best friends, Dan and Carol Steburg.

He leaves behind his wife, Donna, and daughters, Shannon (Rick) Schroeder and Jeanie (Walter) Shimmin, all of North Platte; grandkids, Donavon (Hayley) Weedman, Jasi (Ryan) Quick, Cole Weedman (Jessica Mora) and Kyce Shimmin; great-grandkids, Jaxon Weedman, Zaedyn Quick, Blake Weedman, Andrew Mora and Kynzleigh Quick; brother-in-law, Russ Griesfeller; and other family.

Cremation was chosen. Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 16, at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore, with Richard Karr officiating. Odean Colonial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
