Joseph J. Barnes, 62, of Screven, died Friday, June 8, 2007, after a short illness.

A native of Pierce County, he had lived in Wayne County for most of his life. he was a member of the Screven First Baptist Church, the Screven Masonic Lodge #386 F&AM and was a Shriner. He was retired from CSX Railroad and was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War.

Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Tony and Maria Marnes, Denver CO, Larry and Misty Barnes and Barry and Sarah Barnes, all of Screven; his mother and step-father, Evelyn J. and Randall Cason, Offerman; five sisters, Peggy Dover, Screven, Anita Gardner, Jesup, Margaret Bargeron, Blackshear, Linda Brinkley, Atlanta and Gloria Ratier, Maryville, TN; two brothers, Rusty Barnes and Billy Barnes, both of Jesup; a step-sister, Sandra Davis, Hortense; two step-brothers, Ronnie Cason, Patterson and J.H. Cason, Blackshear; seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 11, from the Screven First Baptist Church with the Rev. I.B. Boyette and the Rev. Joe Gardner officiating.

Interment followed in the Screven Cemetery with masonic rites.

Active pallbearers were members of the Screven Masonic Lodge #368 F&AM.

Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home of Jesup was in charge of arrangements.
