Douglas E. Hawkins, 78, of War, a giant of a man, passed away peacefully Monday, May 1, 2017 surrounded by his loving family.
He was born July 14, 1938 in Castlewood, Va. to the late Ruby Lee Hall Hawkins. He was a retired electrician and foreman for Consol Coal Company. He was involved in his community, especially activities for children.
Douglas was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed spending time restoring his antique cards and working his garden. He was not only devoted to his own family, but also the neighborhood kids.
In addition to his mother he was preceded in death by a sister Arwood Fletcher; two brothers John D. Hawkins and Dillard E. Hawkins; and a granddaughter, Sami Dane Brown.
Doug is survived by his wife of 60 years, Patty Lu Cordisco Hawkins of War; two daughters, Paige Beam and husband Ron, and Beth Stutso all of Bristol, TN; one son , Pete Douglas Hawkins of War; 4 grandchildren, Peyton and Patrick Beam of Bristol, TN, Kaleb Hawkins of War, and Sofia Stutso of Bristol; and a great grandchild Piper Beam Fleenor of Bristol; two sisters, Linda Furman of NC and Dixie Hawkins of FL; and several nieces and nephews. Special appreciation to Heather Russell, Ronnie Morgan, Dooley Johnson and Jonathan Hatcher for always having a special place in Doug’s heart.
