H. P. BANKS.
The subject of this article was born in Garrard county, Kentucky, July 7, 1818. He is the son of Gerard and Elizabeth (Mills) Banks, the former a native of Virginia, the latter of Maryland. He moved with his parents to Marion county in October, 1830, where his father entered 400 acres of land on which he located. Mr. Banks was married December 28, 1837, to Miss Nancy Turpin, daughter of Thomas and Charity C. (Ballenger) Turpin, of Virginia. Mrs. Banks was born in Garrard county, Kentucky, April 10, 1820. Of this union eleven children have been born, of whom two, Garrard and Thomas, are now deceased. Those living are: Talitha, Elizabeth, Achilles, Lynn S., Jane P., Napoleon, Emily, Josephine and Henry Lee. After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Banks resided for a time at Emerson, Mo., and then removed to Lewis county, where Mr. Banks engaged for a time in a saw mill. He afterwards went into a wagon manufactory; and in 1852 took a trip across the plains. He soon returned, however, and again engaged in saw milling, in conjunction with William Yarbrough, for several years. He moved to his present home in 1866. He owns 120 acres of land, valued at $1,800, of the same that his father settled in 1830. Mr. Banks enlisted in the Confederate army in September, 1861, in Company A, Capt. Priest's company, Col. Martin E. Green's regiment, M. S. G. He was transferred to Col. Joe Porter, and paroled in October, 1862. He was in the battles of Lexington and Kirksville, and with Porter in his raid on Palmyra in 1862, besides other skirmishes. Mr. Banks and family are prominent members of the Christian Church, he and his wife having belonged for many years.

An Old Citizen Dead.
Henry P. Banks, one of the oldest citizens of the county, died at his home near Emerson Sunday morning. He was eighty-five years of age at the time of his death and had been in reasonable health up to about a week ago. He was well known all over the county and had many friends who will sympathize with the family in their loss.
