Born April 21, 1929 in Gilbert she was the daughter of the late Dexter and Jeanette Wingo. Evelyn attended Big Creek High School in War leaving during her senior year eloping to New York to marry her husband of 36 years, James Lee Porter who preceded her in death in 1983.
Evelyn was always found faithfully serving the Lord. Over the years she attended Warriormine and Canebrake Freewill Baptist Church, as well as the War Pentecostal Church where she served as church secretary. She will be best remembered for the loving kindness shown to all she met.
She had a servant’s heart and spent many years working with the public at the War Laundromat, Effie Market and the WarriorminePost Office. She was also a special caregiver to many children in the War area.
In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by a sister Ruth Vest; brother Thomas “TC” Wingo; son-in-law Allen Brewster; grandson-in-law Terry McCann; and daughter Jacqueline Porter. The greatest heartbreak of her life was the tragic loss of her only son Thomas Lee Porter at the young age of 17.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughters Debbie Brewster of Thompson Valley, VA, Crystal (Lawrence) Matney of Warriormine, and Jennifer (Michael) Holland of Baptist Valley, VA; grandchildren, Jeff (Tracey) Brewster, Misty McCann, Brandy (Brandon) Stowers, Aaron (Megan) Holland, Kellie Porter and Taylor Matney; and great grandchildren Cody and Reagan McCann, Maisy and Lainey Stowers, and Natalie and Ashley Brewster.
Her life will be celebrated at the Canebrake Freewill BaptistChurch Monday, October 15 from 6-8 p.m.
Funeral service will be conducted on Tuesday, October 16 at 12 p.m. with Rev. Darrell Long officiating. Burial will follow in Grandview Memory Gardens, Bluefield, VA.
