Joseph Newton Holt was born on December 10, 1872 in Haley, Bedford County, Tennessee, the son of Joseph Marion Holt Jr (1837–1896) and Margaret Elizabeth (High) Holt (1842–1898).


He was married in 1897 to Jimmie Eason (1879–1971) of Haley.


A retired locomotive engineer for Nashville Chattanooga & Saint Louis Railroad and living at 3110 Bellwood Avenue in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee, Joseph was a member of McKendree Methodist Church and a member of Railroad Engineers Brotherhood. He was 78 years old and married when he died at home of hypertensive cardiovascular disease on August 22, 1951.


Survivors included his widow Jimmie Eason Holt, daughters Mrs Lottie Montgomery and Mrs Robert A Wiley, son James N Holt, all in Nashville, sisters Mrs J B Thompson of Wartrace, Tennessee, Mrs Jesse Owen and Mrs Grady Jackson at Eagleville, Tennessee, Mrs Charles Gibson in Puyallup, Washington and Mrs Jim Ferrell of Paheecuah, Oklahoma, brothers S T Holt at Haley, C J Holt in Birmingham, Alabama and A R Holt of Puyallup and a grandchild.


Funeral Services were held on August 23rd at Cosmopolitan Funeral Home, and burial was Woodlawn Memorial Park, Nashville.
