Mr. Harry “Butch” Swanson Ferguson, Jr., age 76, a resident of 401 River Road, Washington, died Friday morning, May 10, 2019 at Vidant Medical Center.
A funeral service will be held 2:00 PM on Monday May 13, 2019 at Old Ford Church of Christ officiated by Billy Smithwick. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. Members of the Old Ford Ruritan Club and the Men’s Sunday School Class will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Mr. Ferguson was born on May 17, 1942, son of the late Harry Swanson Ferguson, Sr. and Mildred Dawson Ferguson. He was a 1960 graduate of Washington High School, where he played football, baseball and basketball. He attended Wingate College, where he played basketball. Mr. Ferguson was very active in the community, as well as his church. He coached Little Tar Heel Baseball and Midget League Football. Mr. Ferguson was a former elder at Chippenham Church of Christ, Calvary Church of Christ and former member of Independence Christian Church. He was a current member of Old Ford Church of Christ, where he served as past deacon, elder, Sunday School Teacher, Sunday School Superintendent and interim minister. Mr. Ferguson was a member of the Old Ford Ruritan Club, past District Governor of the Greenville-Goldsboro District and past member of Independence Ruritan Club in Ashland, VA and District Governor of the Chesapeake District. He was employed as a lumber broker for several companies.
On April 14, 1963, he married the former Linda Chesson who survives, for 56 years.
In addition to his wife, Linda of the home, he is survived by his sons: Harry Swanson Ferguson and wife Lynn of Currituck and Fernando Lee Ferguson of Washington; his grandsons: Harry Swanson Ferguson, IV, Andrew Lee Ferguson and William Faucett Ferguson; his sisters: Mary Anna Pearson and husband Johnnie of Winston-Salem and Ella Mae Coburn and husband Frank of Pactolus; his brothers: Bobby Ferguson and wife Charlene of Palentine, IL and Sammie Lee Ferguson of Plymouth; his sister-in-law: Barbara Ferguson of Ahoskie and brother-in-law: Jerry Sullivan of Florida and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers: William Donald Ferguson and Tommy Dawson Ferguson and his sister: Mildred Joyce Ferguson.
