Harvey W. Martin, 83, of Bellfonte, PA and formerly of Ephrata, PA, went to be with the Lord peacefully on May 8, 2019 with his son Jeff and daughter-in-law Ruthi by his side after a years long battle with Alzheimer's. Harvey was son of William and Mary Martin, farmers in Ephrata Pennsylvania, parents of sixteen children, and faithful members of the Mennonite church.

From early manhood and after, Harvey stretched his wings far beyond Lancaster County, first taking a job in California, then entering the PAX service in Algeria, France, Belgium, and Morocco. PAX (Latin for peace) was one of the Christian alternative service programs available to conscientious objectors beginning April 1951 in Europe. Through their labor, housing projects began all over Germany and soon the work continued in Algeria, Bolivia, Greece, Paraguay, and other countries. Harvey W. Martin was one of these volunteers.

When Harvey returned from PAX he married Elta Eby in 1965 and they made their home in Ephrata. He continued to stretch his wings beyond Lancaster and became a Christian business man selling eggs to the people of New York City. Sons, Jeff and Tom, joined the family in 1966 and 1967. Tragically Tom was killed at age 16 in an auto accident and Elta died of cancer in 1991. Jeff married Ruth Myers in 1991, just before his mother's death, and they gave Harvey four grandchildren; Johanna, Jacob, Charlotte, and Abigail. Harvey persevered in weekly trips from Ephrata to New York City through good and bad for over 40 years retiring in 2009.

Harvey is preceded in death by his wife Elta, son Tom, father William, mother Mary, brothers John and Paul, and sister Anna. Harvey is survived by his son Jeff; brothers Henry, William, Ivan, Clarence, James, Titus, and David; and sisters Edna, Mary, Martha, and Mabel.

Harvey's favorite Scripture is Isaiah 9:6, "For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace."

Services will be hosted at Indiantown Mennonite Church, 255 Indiantown Road, Ephrata, PA. Celebrate Harvey's life at a memorial gathering Friday, May 17, 6:30 - 8 P.M. The viewing is Saturday, May 18, 9 - 10 A.M. followed by funeral services 10 - 11 A.M, then a gravesite service and luncheon for family and friends.
