William R. Hyman, 73, of Walnut Street, Williamsport died at Williamsport Hospital on Wednesday, June 13, 2007.

He was the son of the late Theodore W. and Esther Mosteller Hyman.

Born in this city on January 7, 1934, he graduated from the Williamsport High School in 1951, and from Lycoming College in 1955.

Mr. Hyman taught English and French at Montoursville High School from 1955 to 1961. He worked for the Education Department of Honeywell Information Systems as Regional Education Manager in Chicago, IL from 1961 to 1968. He then became their National Education Manager at their home office in Boston, MA. Upon returning to the Williamsport area in 1977, he worked for Northern Central Bank's Data Processing Department.

Mr. Hyman served as a meteorologist in the U.S. Army Signal Corps, White Sands, New Mexico from 1956 to 1958. He was meritoriously promoted to sergeant prior to returning to civilian life.

An opera enthusiast for many years, he was one of the original founders of the new Metropolitan Opera House in Lincoln Center where his name is listed in Founders' Hall. He was also one of the founding members of the Metropolitan Opera Encore Society, and a member of both the Metropolitan Opera Guild and the Lyric Opera Guild of Chicago.

Mr. Hyman was a patron for the restoration of the Williamsport Community Arts Center.

A niece and two nephews in New Jersey survive him. His sister June A. Rinker died in 1977, and also his beloved cat "Sassy".

A viewing will be held 10 – 11 a.m. Saturday at the Allen & Redmond Funeral Home, 331 Elmira St. A funeral service will be held 11am following the viewing with the Rev. Stephen Haupert officiating. Burial will follow in Montoursville Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either The Metropolitan Opera Guild, 70 Lincoln Center Plaza, New York, NY 10023 or to the Lycoming County SPCA, 2805 Reach Road, Williamsport, PA 17701.
