Laverne Jones
December 2, 1919 - April 19, 2019

Laverne “Smith” Jones was born in Jamestown, Texas. She was the fifth child of William and Adna Smith.

Laverne grew up on a 620 -acre farm in the Providence area. She graduated from Van High School in 1938. The summer she accompanied her younger brother to take a load of watermelons to the Dallas Market, she met her future husband, Delton Jones. They married in 1942 shortly before he was drafted. After the war, they moved to California where they lived for over 50 years. In 1983, the couple retired and moved to East Texas where they bought a home on Lake Palestine in Flint.

Laverne was a very social person her entire life. Upon their return to Texas, she joined various clubs, including the Newcomers and Red Hat. She chose Noon Day Baptist as her home church. She loved playing games and even learned to play bridge, but her favorite was Texas 42. She regularly played at senior centers in the area and won a number of tournaments. She was so talented she became known as the “Queen of 42.” A few years ago, Laverne quit playing in tournaments, claiming she didn’t have room to house any more trophies.

Laverne was a natural homemaker. She was well known for her Southern Cooking, although her fried chicken with all the sides were company’s favorites. She often received requests for fresh purple hull peas, served with turnip greens and cornbread. Laverne was also known for her pies and cobblers. Fresh peach served with homemade ice cream was always a hit. At some point she took a cake decorating class and began baking fancy birthday cakes. She was an expert seamstress and often created her own patterns by copying designer dresses.

Delton passed away suddenly in 1990, but Laverne remained in their home. She remarried in 1993 to Jimmie, a lifelong friend who had also lost his spouse. She outlived Jimmie as well. Laverne worked at Pine Cove Retreat until she was a young 80 years old.

In 2014, Laverne sold her home and moved to Atria Willow Park Senior Living where she played Texas 42 every day. Her joyful and easy spirit always made it easy for Laverne to acquire friends. Living at Atria Willow was no exception. When her eyesight began to fail, Laverne was grateful for the support of these friends. Laverne passed away peacefully at Hospice of East Texas on Good Friday… a perfect day for her to make her transition.
Laverne is survived by her daughter, Diana Blakeley, her grandchildren, Wendy Riggs, Casey Jones and Corey Jones, and her great grandchildren, Nick Ciano, Justin Ciano, Abby Jones, and Josiah Jones.

Her five siblings, two husbands, a son, and a grandson all preceded her in death.
