Joy loved, and was loved by three husbands who predeceased her: Bob Sauer (d 1980), Jeff Nelson (d 2001), and Jack Brewer (d 2011).
In 2000 Joy retired from the No. St. Paul/Maplewood/Oakdale, MN School District, and that year she and Jeff moved to Green Valley, AZ.
While living in Green Valley, Joy gave up her golf game for a wide variety of volunteer activities, including work for the Primavera Women's Shelter, the Tubac Center of the Arts, St. Andrew's Clinic, and American Legion Post 66. She also served on the boards of both the Friends of the Library and the Green Valley/Sahuarita/Amado Food Bank. She particularly enjoyed being a member of PEO as well as the Companion of the Holy Cross, and Daughters of the King. In addition, she was an active member of St. Francis-in-the-Valley Episcopal Church.
During her lifetime Joy was fortunate enough to have traveled the globe, to indulge in her great love of reading, and to spend time with her family and her many friends. She was a kind and compassionate person who gave generously of her time and talents to others. Joy's keen sense of humor never left her even in the darkest times. She was a vibrant, active person, and a woman of faith with a fierce will to live.
Joy is survived by Sandi Sauer Geurkink (Wesley), nephew and niece Chip Sauer (Alisa), Mary Elizabeth Meyer (Nate), and eight great-nieces and nephews. She also is survived by her very special friend and caretaker, Rosa Olivas.
A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 3, 2017, at St. Francis-in-the-Valley Episcopal Church, 600 S. La Canada Dr., in Green Valley, AZ.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her name to the Food Bank, to The Animal League of Green Valley, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
