Lowell David "Duke" Embs, beloved father, grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 27, 2013. He was born in Chicago, Illinois on April 12, 1929, the son of Frank and Dora (Schmidt) Embs.

The second of three children, Lowell attended Sutherland Elementary School and Morgan Park High School where he excelled on the wrestling and football teams. Lowell began college at Beloit College in Wisconsin and graduated from the University of Illinois in 1950 with a B.S. in marketing and management and as a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity.

In 1950 Lowell enlisted in the United States Naval Cadet program where he became an aircraft carrier pilot flying the F9F cougar. In September 1953 he met his future wife, Sallie Wiggins, in Jacksonville, Florida at Riverside Presbyterian Church where they married on December 26 the same year.

In 1955, while overseas on the Midway ship with his squadron "Hell Razors," Lowell became a father to the first of his five daughters. That same year he ended active duty, joined the naval reserves, and began working at Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance where he had an illustrious career. Lowell left the naval reserves in 1960 and in 1966 he and his family moved to San Antonio after being named General Agent of the company's South Texas agency.

In San Antonio Lowell became actively involved in First Presbyterian Church as a deacon, elder and choir member, and he volunteered at the Victoria Courts local mission where he taught Sunday school and organized Christmas activities. He was an active member of the Republican party and was an on-air host of KLRN's public television campaign drive for several years.

Lowell joined the Flying 10 flight club and piloted his Bonanza aircraft all over the country with his wife as navigator and his "Embs gems" daughters as passengers. Lowell was a past president of the San Antonio Fiesta Commission and he was known for throwing big yard parties to celebrate the weeklong event. He was also past president of the Alamo Heights Recreational Council and the Alamo Chapter of the Navy League, and a member of the San Antonio Writers Guild, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Argyle, Pecan Valley Golf Club, and Woodcreek resort in Wimberley, TX; in addition to serving as past President of the San Antonio Ballet Society and on the Board of Directors of the American Heart Association, SA affiliate.

Lowell was an active parent in the Alamo Heights school system where he volunteered on numerous fronts and attended all of his girls' events. His love of music continued in later years as he sang and traveled with the Chordsman barbershop singers. An active member of MENSA, he was a passionate reader, writer of short stories/vignettes and lifelong learner.

Lowell will be remembered lovingly and happily for his positive attitude and zest for life, devotion to his family and friends, embrace of those from all walks of life, and for living his Christian faith.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Douglas F. Embs and wife, Sallie.

He is survived by sister, Doreen Embs Nortrup and husband, Larry of Sarasota, FL; daughters, Leslie Embs Bradford and husband, Charles of Larchmont, NY, Lisa Embs Green and husband, Wayne of Las Vegas, Jennifer Johnston Embs of Fort Mill, SC, Audrey Embs Detrick and husband, Sam of Boulder, CO, and Sallie Anne Guy and husband, Tom of San Antonio, TX; grandchildren, Alexandra Beam and Charles Tyler Bradford, Benjamin Brian Green and Logan and Maddie Guy; nephews, Tom and Jim Nortrup and Doug and David Embs all of Chicago; niece, Jane Daniels of Tampa, FL; cousins, Ed Prinslow of Evanston, IL, Ralph Lambrecht and Tom Zuhlke of Chicago, IL.
