Fannyann was one of Africa's modern day heroes. She describes herself as a 'woman who loves women, someone with many dreams." Her motto in life was 'Perseverance'. Founder of one of Africa's first gay rights groups in a continent that reveres and barbarises Lesbian and Gay People, it goes without saying that Fannyann's life was a brave, selfless one.
Fannyann Eddy, was murdered while working late in the offices of the Sierra Leone Lesbian and Gay Association in September 2004. Many believe that Fannyann's murder was a homophobic hate crime judging by the brutal nature of the attack. She was viciously raped, stabbed and her neck was broken. Her murderers have not been brought to justice. As Fannyann has told you herself, this horrific incident is an everyday occurrence not just in Sierra Leone or Africa but throughout the developing world and more shocking in the western world too. The thing that brings a tear to the eyes of many in the story of Fannyann is that she was one of those people with the power to end this. old. Her 9-year old son has lost a doting and loving mother. Sierra Leone has lost a brave and visible leader. The global LGBT movement has lost a daring and fierce human rights defender.
