Donald Russell Cherry was the son of Mr and Mrs. Russell B. Cherry. He married Harriet Kathleen Dolan, daughter of Mrs. Kathleen Van Duyse, on July 19, 1952 in Ottawa.

Donald studied at the Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph, Ontario and University of Toronto, graduating in 1945. He had his veterinary clinic on York Street in ByWard Market, Ottawa until 1976, when he opened an office in his newly built home in Osgoode, Ontario.
Dr. Don was the official vet and chairman of the Ottawa Winter Fair, as well as the official vet for the RCMP Musical Ride from 1945 to 2000.
In 1988, he visited Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth at Windsor Castle, where they discussed her horse Burmese. Burmese was a gift to the Queen from the RCMP and was trained in Ottawa and treated by Dr. Don.
At his interment on April 17th at Beechwood Cemetery, the complete Musical Ride (32 horse and men) formed an honour guard to bid farewell to Dr.Don.

At home in Osgoode, Ontario surrounded by his family on Thursday, April 13, 2000, in his 79th year. Loving husband of Harriet for 47 years. Dear father of Anne (Bruce Claassen), Ruth Harrison (Mark) of Oakville and Elizabeth, Farquhar (David). Also loved by his three grandchildren, Matthew, Kate and Michael Harrison. Dr. Cherry was a dedicated and highly respected veterinarian for 55 years in the Ottawa area. Since 1945, he was proud of being the official veterinarian for the RCMP Musical Ride. Friends may visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod St. on Saturday and Sunday Funeral Service in the Chapel on Monday April 17, at 12 noon. Interment Beechwood Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions to the Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre or the Victorian Order of Nurses.
