Hattie Pearl Smith Harris was born on March 14, 1939 in Mount Holly, to the union of Oscar Smith and Ruby Strickland Smith. She confessed her faith in Christ at an early while attending Damascus Baptist Church in Mount Holly. Later she joined Olive Light A.M.E. Church in Smackover, where she remained a faithful servant until her heavenly father called her home on Oct. 8, 2015.

Hattie Pearl was the kitchen coordinator because she was such a good cook. She prepared and served many meals during various church functions. She assisted the pastor during communion and wherever there was a need in the church and community, she was there. Hattie Pearl always had a kind or pleasant word to say. Hattie Pearl had various jobs working in private homes, but on Oct. 1, 1970 Hattie Pearl and her husband, Charles, started their own janitorial business making her co-owner of Harris Custodian Service.

They begin at first doing residential cleaning and later advanced to commercial building where they serviced in the Smackover, Camden, El Dorado and Junction City areas. During this time, each Christmas Hattie Pearl would bake home made pound cakes for each customer,which later she switched to homemade pies. She enjoyed working with the many people she encountered. She loved planting in her garden collards green and onions to give to all who wanted. Hattie Pearl had a deep affection for cooking meals during holidays for all the family to enjoy. She would prepare her family their favorite dishes.

Hattie Pearl was preceded by death by her parents; stepmother; three brothers, Tom Henry Smith, Oscar Smith Jr., and Willie Lee Smith; one sister, Katherine Smith McAdoo.

Her loving memories will be cherished by her husband, Charles E. Harris of Smackover; two daughters, Lessie Richardson of El Dorado, and Charlene Harris of Smackover; one brother, Jimmy Lee Smith of Milwaukee; two sisters, Helen Joyce Calloway of San Antonio, Texas, and Maxine Lowery (Clifton) of El Dorado; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one greatgreat-grandchild.

Public viewing will be held from 2 until 5 p.m. today.

Funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 16, at Olive Light A.M.E. Church in Smackover. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Friday for viewing. The Rev. Jonas Williams will officiate. Burial with be at Hicks Cemetery in Smackover, under the direction of Andrews Funeral Home.
