She attended Bryan College where she was senior editor of the college newspaper. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in 2003. She landed a job with the 'Chattanooga Free Press' before returning to Dayton and a job as columnist with the 'Herald-News.' She became a presence on the internet, and another book, 'A Year of Biblical Womanhood: How a Liberated Woman Found Herself Sitting on Her Roof, Covering Her Head, and Calling Her Husband Master,' published in 2012, was listed as a New York Times Bestseller. That year, she was named one of 'Christianity Today' magazine’s 50 Women to Watch. Her book, 'Searching for Sunday: Loving, Leaving, and Finding the Church' followed in 2015. In addition to her website and books, she spent much of her time in speaking engagements around the United Stated. She served on a White House council for faith-based partnerships during President Obama’s second term. In 2014, citing exhaustion, she retired from the road when she and her husband had their children. She continued writing, however, and a final book, 'Inspired: Slaying Giants, Walking on Water, and Loving the Bible Again' was published in 2018. In April 2019, she was admitted to hospital with flu-like symptoms and then suffered a severe allergic reaction to antibiotics administered. When her symptoms expanded to brain seizures, she was placed into a medically induced coma. After a swelling of her brain caused severe damage, she passed away at age 37.
