Educator. After earning bachelors' degrees from both Wilberforce University and the University of Wisconsin, he became one of the few African Americans to earn a commission as an army officer during the First World War. After the war, he served as president of the East St. Louis, Illinois chapter of the National Urban League. He subsequently moved to Wilberforce, Ohio where he served on the faculty of Wilberforce University and, later, Central State University between 1922 and 1956. In the process, he became one of the first African Americans to earn a masters degree from The Ohio State University. At Wilberforce University, he was a Professor of Secondary Education and taught a wide variety of subjects, including history, mathematics and English literature. He also served as the Chairman of Athletics during Wilberforce's reign as one of the nation's black college football powers. He also helped establish the Wilberforce Chapters of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity and Sigma Pi Phi Boule.
