LUCY FAIRBANKS HARTWELL
Lucy Ann Fairbanks was born in Newark August 22nd, 1837. She was
the daughter of Warren Fairbanks and Mary Taft and her early life was spent in her home town. She married Sumner Hartwell of Newark and about 45 years ago they came to Burke to live.
Four sons were born to them, two of whom are now living. Since Mr. Hartwell's death, which occurred many years ago, these sons, Warner and Warren, have been their mother's comfort and support, doing all in their power to lighten her burdens and make life easier for her.
Mrs. Hartwell became a christian in her early youth, and was one of the charter members of this church, in which she has ever been a most faithful and efficient worker. She was a woman of rare sweetness and beauty of character, and her influence has been, and we believe will be far-reaching. Three years ago she went to Plymouth, N. H., to keep house for her son, Warner, after the death of his wife, and
has remained there since, cheering his loneliness, and making a home for him and her grandson, Reginald. She has been quite poorly for some time and on Thursday, May 4th, she had a severe shock, from which she never rallied.
The end came May 10th, and the funeral took place in West Burke Saturday afternoon, District Superintendent R.F. Lowe of St. Johnsbury officiating, assisted by our own pastor. Rev. G.W. Douglass. The church was filled and the profusion of flowers told of the
deep regard felt by everyone for the dear one who had gone. The burial
was beside her husband in Hillside cemetery. Beside her sons she leaves one sister, Mrs. Loisa Walter of this place,
a grandson, Reginald, of Plymouth, and other distant relatives. The sons especially, and all who mourn, have the deep sympathy of a large circle of friends.
Those from out of town who attended the funeral of Mrs. Hartwell Saturday were Warner Hartwell of Plymouth, N. H., Mr. and Mrs. Warren
Hartwell and Mr. and Mrs. Fred S. Dyke of Northfield, Mrs. Ada Silsby
and Mrs. Flora Washburn of St. Johnsbury, Phil Hartwell, Mrs. Silas Coliston and Dr. and Mrs. Davis of Lyndonville, Mr. and Mrs. D. C. Huntley of Stanstead, Moulton Taft and Mrs. Mary Morgan of Sutton, Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Burt of Concord and others.
