Irene Simmons Austin, 88, of Concord, passed away Saturday, May 4, 2019, at her residence. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, James Austin. Born in Appomattox County, January 7, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Clarence B. Simmons and Lizzie Ranson Simmons. After years of service, she was retired from Imperial Reading Co. Her hobbies including ceramics and bowling. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Louise Wood, Zane Grey Wooldridge and Glenda Lee White and one brother, Wade Burnette Simmons. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two brothers, Howard Simmons and his wife, Maxine, and John Henry Simmons; and a number of nieces and nephews. A service celebrating her life will be conducted at 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 8, 2019, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel with the Rev. Roger Roller officiating. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, May 7, 2019, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel.
